In den 1820ern zieht der legendäre Trapper Hugh Glass durch die Weiten der USA. Die von Captain Andrew Henry angeführte Expedition ist dabeiin die winterlichen Wildnisden Missouri River zu erforschen, als Hugh Glass von einem Bären angegriffen und schwer verwundet wird. Seine Begleiter glauben nicht, dass er überleben wird und lassen ihn zurück. Am Ende seiner Kräfte und davon überzeugt, dass man ihn bewusst im Stich gelassen hat, spornt ihn der Hass zu Höchstleistungen an. Er sinnt auf Rache und schleppt sich durch die eisige Bergwelt.
