Die spätere Soullegende James Brown ist in ärmlichen Verhältnissen aufgewachsen. Sein Vater war gewalttätig. Der Einstieg in die Musik geschah in einem Gospelchor, später ist er dann mit den Famous Flames aufgetreten, wo er schnell zum Star der Band wurde. James Brown war ein genialer Entertainer, aber auch ein kluger Geschäftsmann. Dagegen gab es private Probleme, die auch zu einer Haftstrafe führten. Seinen eigenen Weg ist er aber immer kompromisslos gegangen.
