In Plymouth hat während des englischen Bürgerkrieges 1644 der puritanische Heerführer Oliver Cromwell die Streitkräfte der Königstreuen entscheidend geschlagen und den Monarchen Charles I. entmachtet. Als dessen Anhänger, die "Cavaliers" sich 1648 erneut erheben, wird der König gefangengesetzt und ein Jahr später hingerichtet.
