Sally Fielding plays North Carolina factory worker Norma Rae Webster, who becomes involved with union activities after a tragic workplace accident spurs her to action to protect her colleagues' health. She faces down intimidation from the managers and criticism from her husband to challenge injustice, and discovers her own strength in the process. The story is based on Crystal Lee Sutton's life as a textile worker in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where the battle for the workers' union took place against a J.P. Stevens Textiles mill.
