Contributors to Photoworks Annual discuss ideas explored within the recently published LGBTQ+ themed issue of the photography art and culture journal.

Photoworks Annual Issue 24 explores how photography has been used as a tool to document, advocate for and spark debate to help foreground LGBTQ+ rights.

Speakers include:

Edwin Coomasaru positions gender roles and performing sexuality as metaphors in understanding the conflict in Northern Ireland. Coomasaru is an AHRC funded PhD Candidiate at The Courtauld Institute of Art, researching Northern Irish masculinities and the legacy of the Troubles in art and visual culture.

Sara Davidmann will talk on her series Eve, Adam, and the Garden of Earthly Delights, the role of studio portraiture in defining identity and her collaborative approach to creating the photographs. Davidmann’s photography encompasses the personal and the social/political, highlighting and questioning the relationship betwen the individual and society.

Olu Jenzen will discuss Herb Ritts’ 1993 Vanity Fair cover of k.d. lang and Cindy Crawford. Olu is Principle lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Brighton.
