In an exciting partnership with Genesis Cinema we proudly present...BARBARELLA.

December 2017 marked the 80th year for one of Hollywood’s most interesting and resilient stars; Jane Fonda. After beginning her career as an amateur theater performer Fonda has gone from starlet to activist to fitness guru to feminist spokesperson. Her colourful career has been one of fascination for many - so to celebrate her brilliant career insofar DISPATCH Feminist Moving Image are publishing three essays on the star written by Daniel Massie, and will be screening the film that saw her in one of her most infamous roles, Barbarella.

Barbarella is a piece of cult sci-fi cinema directed by Fonda’s then husband Roger Vadim. The film offers a kitsch reflection on the burgeoning sexual freedom of the swinging sixties. Barbarella herself is a seemingly sexually liberated female lead, something that was previously unseen in much mainstream cinema.

Lucy Bolton, senior lecturer in film studies at Queen Mary University of London, will open the screening with an introduction on the stardom of Jane Fonda and the lasting influence of Barbarella as a cult figure. We will also explore Barbarella’s effect on filmmaking through the presentation of two short films created by filmmakers Marianne Murray and Ayesha Tan Jones.

Early bird tickets are just £7.50 until the 1st of Jan!
