Driven by the suffragist and suffragette movements, this was a major step towards equal voting rights for all women and men, achieved in 1928. To recognise this momentous period in history, WE are joining up with London Transport Museum and Transport for London for a festival of talks, debates, immersive experiences and workshops. WE will be celebrating women’s contribution to society over the past 100 years and debating the progress we are making towards equality in the 21st century. Highlight activities include: · Keynote by Justine Simons, OBE - Deputy Mayor, Culture and the Creative Industries · All aboard for Equalia! Join Catherine Mayer, co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party and author of ‘Attack of the 50 Ft. Women’ on a journey to the gender-equal future. Is there a fast track to gender equality and what should we expect when we reach our destination? · An expert-packed panel debate to find out what’s happening to drive gender equality in transport, exploring the inequalities women still face and the action that needs to be taken. · A dynamic PechaKucha* presentations on the portrayal of women in art, fashion, the media, and advertising. From portrayal of women in the workplace, to bikes, bloomers and early cycling posters. Depictions of women in colonial-era art, to challenging beauty standards in the fashion industry. · Stand Up Comedy with queer comedy collective the LOL Word · A history class on women’s rights and feminist facts with Claire Kennan, Citizens 800 Project at Royal Holloway, University of London. · The Futures Market Place where you can network with a selection of handpicked feminist organisations and changemakers, get creative with feminist craft and try on 1890’s women's convertible cycling costumes. · Enjoy a bar and see the Museum’s collection after hours, including the special exhibition Poster Girls – a century of art and design, celebrating 20th and 21st century female graphic designers and the contribution they have made to poster design over the last one hundred years. With over 150 posters and original artworks on display, this exhibition recognises some of these forgotten design heroines and reveals the hidden stories behind their work. WE hope to see you there!
