Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts kamen, begünstigt durch die koloniale Expansion, viele Objekte aus Afrika nach Europa. Man betrachtete diese als Kuriosität oder als wissenschaftlichen Beleg einer Kultur. Aber Kunst – nein, das waren die Masken und Skulpturen für die Europäer nicht. Die Afrikaspezialistin Silke Seybold erklärt wieviel diese Wahrnehmung mit dem (Un)wissen der Rezipienten zu tun hatte.
