description:
The first in our Working For Equality series of free film screenings about women standing up for their rights at work is the Academy award winning Norma Rae (1979).

Sally Fielding plays North Carolina factory worker Norma Rae Webster, who becomes involved with union activities after a tragic workplace accident spurs her to action to protect her colleagues' health. She faces down intimidation from the managers and criticism from her husband to challenge injustice, and discovers her own strength in the process.

The story is based on Crystal Lee Sutton's life as a textile worker in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where the battle for the workers' union took place against a J.P. Stevens Textiles mill.

Barking Learning Centre is 8 minutes walk from Barking station. Map: https://goo.gl/maps/D5zMRbXnWhn

The film will be shown in the conference room on the first floor of the Learning Centre, there is wheelchair access via a lift.

Barking station is on the Overground, Hammersmith & City, and District lines, as well as c2c rail from Fenchurch Street.
