Over the past academic year we’ve been working on a weekly supplementary curriculum in South London, as well as starting a similar project in Tower Hamlets. Working with the students, we’ve covered topics such as colonialism and colonial legacies, homonationalism, orientalism and histories of QTPoC resistance.
Through these project we have produced a magazine with the students, focusing on some of the issues covered in class, as well as through collaboration with many other brilliant students and educators. The magazine features articles asking “what is whiteness?” pieces articulating why Islamophobia is racist, as well as essays on the decolonization of the continent of Africa (plus much more). So to mark the release of our Youth magazine, Consented brings you Rethinking Education.
This event, across two panels featuring students, teachers and academics, will look at the different educational approaches many groups are taking, both within and outside of school. We’ll ask questions about educational spaces, as well as interrogating ideas around knowledge and power.
Speakers include: Professor Kehinde Andrews (Birmingham City University), Jasper Kain (Football Beyond Borders), Olivia Francis-Cornibet (Legally Black and Consented Youth participant), Stella Rousham (Consented Youth participant), Daisy Ifama (Fearless Futures) More TBA
This event will take place on Sunday 27th May from 1.00 pm at Birkbeck’s Malet Street campus in room B34.
All money raised from this event covers the costs of running the event and contributes to the costs of running our school project.
