Join the International Women's Strike CT delegation to stand in solidarity with the rank and file members of the Stamford Hilton Hotel Unite Here Local 217 as they fight for a fair contract!
All Out March 8th!
On International Women’s Day:
Will You Stand with the Hilton Hotel Workers in Stamford?
What: Join Connecticut members of the International Women’s Strike at “Feminists Stand with the Hilton Hotel Workers!” We will make a show of support for the hotel workers and especially the housekeepers who helped to lead a successful union recognition drive. Now they are strug-gling for a decent contract with higher wages, better heath care, and pensions.
When: Thursday, March 8, 2:30-5:00 p.m.
Where: 1 First Stamford Place, Stamford, CT 06902. We will have a presence with signs out-side the front door while a delegation visits the hotel management to explain that the women’s movement is supporting the workers. From 3:00 to 5:00 pm there is a shift change and female hotel workers will join us outside.
Can you join us to say Feminists Stand with the Hilton Hotel Workers. If so, please email Melissa Muldoon from IWS CT at melissa.anne.muldoon@gmail.com or call her at 860-990-9931.
Why: On January 31, a group of Connecticut women attended the Brooklyn launch of the March 8, 2018 International Women’s Strike US. The IWS US is calling for women to mobilize on International Women’s Day in solidarity with similar actions around the world and toward the construction of a feminism for the 99%. Their goal is to build relationships of solidarity between diverse organizations of women, and all those who seek to build a global feminist, working class movement. On the launch panel, among other speakers, was Maria Inés Orjuela, a housekeeper at the newly organized Hilton Hotel in Stamford. Orjuela described in great detail what it took for the housekeepers to begin organizing and with other hotel workers to win a union election on Dec. 4, 2017. (You can watch her speech on a video posted on the home page of IWS US and see other housekeepers explain their positions on youtube. And here is an article about the plight of the housekeepers, in particular: https://socialistaction.org/2017/11/16/why-hilton-housekeepers-need-a-union/.)
Orjuela also proclaimed her local’s support for the IWS March 8 mobilization and is a signer of this appeal. There could be no more fitting way to begin the work of the IWS US in Connecticut than to mobilize in Stamford on March 8 to demand that Local 217 UNITE-HERE get a fair contract that acknowledges the dignity of all the workers who toil there. In discussions with the union as a whole, we have determined that a 2:30 pm working women’s solidarity delegation to the hotel management and a feminist presence with signs outside through the shift change, which lasts from 3 - 5 pm, would be the most effective display of our support.
