Delhi | Art+Feminism Wikipedia Editathon 2018

At Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi, India
On 3rd March 2018 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Description

Feminism In India, The Heritage Lab and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art invite you to the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Editathon on March 3. Prior knowledge of how to edit and create Wikipedia articles is NOT REQUIRED!

Take part in this free edit-a-thon featuring introductory tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments. Our specific focus will be adding and enhancing articles on women in Indian Art, represented through an ongoing exhibition at the Museum.

REGISTER HERE: bit.ly/AFdelhi

Anyone interested in learning more about women in the arts or how to edit Wikipedia, regardless of experience, gender, or background, is encouraged to attend. Wikipedia tutorials will be provided for beginners and art experts will be around to give research and citation advice. Contributors should bring their laptops and chargers.

Why are we doing this?
We are all aware of the large reach and popularity of Wikipedia. However, what most people don’t know is that, according to a study conducted in 2011, only 9% of the editors at Wikipedia were women. And the percentage for India is even lower, just 3%.

Wikipedia recognises the systemic gender bias that is created because of factors such as these and thus enables its diverse range of users to edit and create Wikipedia pages, with reliable and authentic sources.

What will we do?
During the event, the first hour will be dedicated to introduction and briefing on how to create and edit articles on Wikipedia. Then participants will work in groups or individually on a pre-made list of Indian women artists who lack representation on Wikipedia. At the end of the day, all of this newly made Wikipedia pages will be collated.
