Last year on January 21, millions of women and allies took to the streets in D.C., Boston and across the world in commitment to fighting for social and political change. This year the Women's March is asking us to translate this explosion of new energy and activism into direct electoral power by supporting campaigns and advocating for policies that align with our values. The new phase of this movement is called #PowertothePolls, and this will be the Andover area kickoff. We need to find ways center the voices of women from our most marginalized communities and bring the issues they face to the forefront, especially those of us living in areas where those voices are often drowned out by a privileged majority.
We'll start this event with a peaceful standout at the intersection of Rt. 28 and 133 in Andover (Shawsheen Square.) Bring signs with messages of love, resistance, and feel free to localize the messages! (Responding to, for example: recent hate incidents in our schools, local legislators with anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ agendas, immigrant families in our area being separated, the civil rights of our trans neighbors up for repeal on the 2018 ballot... we have plenty to speak out about right here at home).
Let's show our community that we're still here, and we're not going to give up on making this a better world.
Due to the likely very cold weather, we'll keep it short - about an hour.* If temperatures drop to 15F or below, we will try for a 30 min standout ending promptly at 1:30pm
After the standout we will make our way to Town Market at 429 South Main Street in Andover to warm up and discuss ideas and plans for the year ahead! We ask that all attendees please make a food and/or beverage purchase after arriving so that our presence is that of paying guests. If this would present any challenge please PM one of the AASG admins and we can make arrangements privately. Our priority is for all to feel welcome and included.
