Benim Çocuğum (My Child)
Film Screening and Discussion

Thursday, December 14th, 8.00pm

What can you do, when your child „comes out“ to you? This is opening question of the Turkish documentary film "Benim Çocuğum". And it is answered by a group of mothers and fathers in Istanbul: Support it – against all prejudice, homophobia, transphobia, and hate. Because this is best done through a group effort, these parents founded the family initiative LISTAG in 2009, where together they not only support their gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender children, but have also started to publicly fight for the rights of LGBT people in Turkey.

In his touching documentary, director Can Candan allows these parents to tell their personal stories. They deal with helplessness and shame, with the fear of being condemned by a conservative society with traditionally strict family patterns, and yet they show how worthwhile it can be to be courageous, to resist, and ultimately: to love. For everyone must ask themselves: How much does my child mean to me? And how much does the society I live in?

Following the screening, Günseli Dum, one of the film's protagonists, and the director Can Candan will discuss these questions with the audience.

Directed by: Can Candan. Turkey 2013, 83 Min.
Film in Turkish with English subtitles / Discussion in English and Turkish.
Free entrance.

Regie: Can Candan. Türkei 2013, 83 min.
