„Never Arrive“ tells the story of Farah Abdullahi Abdi, a young Somali woman, who was forced to flee from her home in Kenya because of persecution and stigma associated with her sexual orientation.

The author is a young Somali refugee who came to Malta without her family at only 16 years of age. The book is based on her journey, not only physical but also mental and emotional, a story about one woman‘s dreams and aspirations and her challenges as she crosses borders and endures unspeakable hardships insearch of the future she believes she deserves. It is a story of self- acceptance and the will to risk it all for freedom. The often dangerous, brutal and terrifying events that most asylumseekers experience are vividly portrayed in Never Arrive.

Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade, writes about Farah, "Being a survivor, stubborn and full of life and entrepreneurial spirit it is obvious that Farah can an inspiration to many, especially and these difficult times when Europe needs solidarity, humanity and more openness to people who come to us for shelter. Farah's story expresses values that every European should seek -- mercy, courage, human rights and equality. He leaves no one unmoved and reminds us that behind every single number in the statistics of immigrants is a precious individual with his/her proper dreams and capabilities."

After presenting the book the panelists will discuss issues concerning the situation of refugees and asylum politics in Germany and Europe in the context of gender and sexuality with a special focus on the situation of LGBTIQ*-refugees.

The exhibition Where love is illegal: Fotografien von LGBTI aus Tunesien is shown at the time of the event in the floors of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. Participants are kindly invited to visit the exhibition - before and after the event.

Buchvorstellung und Gespräch
„Never Arrive“ – mit Farah Abdullahi Abdi

Unsere Gäste:
• Farah Abdullahi Abdi, Autorin
• Aliya Khabaz, Trans-Aktivistin, ehrenamtliche Helferin für LGBTIQ* Geflüchtete bei Rubicon e.V.
• Javid Nabiyev, Gay-Aktivist, Gründer von "Queer Refugees for Pride"
