Saturday 21 October, 10:30 – 15:45 (doors open at 10:00)
For students, researchers, practitioners and activists working at the intersection of LGBTQI+ activism, art and social justice.
Location: Women’s Art Library, ground floor of Goldsmiths Library in the Rutherford Building (corner of Dixon Rd and Lewisham Way, London SE14 6NW)
The event facilitates an interdisciplinary knowledge exchange on art, LGBTQI+ visibility, human rights, social justice, diversity and equality. Professionals, students, researchers and activists working in one or more of the above fields are invited to share their practice and together investigate the relationship between art and social justice, potentially building future collaborations.
The programme consists of
- a presentation by Kapil Gupta, Programme Associate for LGBTI Rights at the Sigrid Rausing Trust, providing a global overview of LGBTI activism from the point of view of persecutory laws, and a discussion on the role of arts along legal changes in the UK
- an interactive workshop exploring the socio-political and economic dimensions of art and LGBTQI+ activism
- small group discussions enabling participants to share their own art and social justice practice (with the use of visual aids)
- a presentation by Suzanne van Rossenberg, PhD candidate in the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries at Middlesex University, introducing transdisciplinarity of art research, practice and activism
The study day is a pre-event to the Emerald Winter Pride Art Awards competition and exhibition, which currently accepts artwork submissions around the theme 'Beyond the Binaries'. Find more information about the Awards and entering the competition HERE.
The interdisciplinary study day is a free event, but registration is necessary.
