White Nationalism and Misogyny: The Intersection of Hate

The rise of an emboldened white nationalist movement across the country furthered by a complicit White House has spurred a need for an open dialogue about white supremacy and its misogynist underpinnings. What does this intersection mean for the future of equality and justice in our country?

NOW-NYC and the Columbia University Center for Gender and Sexuality Law are proud to host White Nationalism and Misogyny: The Intersection of Hate, a thought-provoking panel about the relationship between white supremacy and misogyny. Come hear from renowned scholars in critical race theory talk about how to tackle racism and sexism in this hostile climate.

Speakers:

Kimberlé Crenshaw, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the African American Policy Forum and Professor at Columbia Law School, is a leading scholar of critical race theory and has written about black feminist legal theory, politics, civil rights, and the law. The brilliant mind behind intersectionality, Crenshaw has been influential in contributing to the discussion around race and gender politics in America.

Dr. Jessie Daniels, Author and Professor of Sociology at Hunter College and at The Graduate Center, CUNY, has spent the last 25 years calling attention to white supremacy. She is the author or editor of five books, among them White Lies and Cyber Racism, which offers a look at white supremacy before and after the Internet. She is currently working on a book called Tweetstorm: The Rise of the Alt-Right and the Mainstreaming of White Nationalism.

Angela King, Deputy Director and Co-Founder of Life After Hate, an organization working to help individuals wishing to escape the White Nationalist movement. As a youth, she struggled with her identity and fell in with a group of skinheads. Her involvement with a violent extremist group landed her in prison, where she discovered a new sense of identity. Angela now works as a keynote speaker, consultant, and character educator to combat white supremacy.

Sonia Ossorio, President of the National Organization for Women of New York, the nation's largest organization working to advance women's rights, will be moderating the panel.
