Unequal Gender Representation in the Arts

Female artists and creatives face a challenging road. Consider for instance that in the art world, women make up 61% of graduates, yet account for less than 30% of artists exhibited in London galleries. We will be looking at topics like: gallery representation, women in tech and gaming, getting your script produced and commissions for choreography/performance/visual art.

Christiana Ebohon-Green, Award-winning Drama Director and Writer in TV and short films who has worked in television for 15 years. Directing credits include: Father Brown, Holby City, Eastenders, Doctors, Hollyoaks. Zoë Howe, A music writer, drummer and visual artist whose debut novel Shine On, Marquee Moon was shortlisted for the Virginia Prize for Fiction in 2016. Zoë’s renowned rock biographies include Typical Girls? The Story of The Slits, Barbed Wire Kisses - The Jesus and Mary Chain Story, Stevie Nicks – Visions, Dreams & Rumours. She has played drums with artists: Viv Albertine, Anne Pigalle, Kelly Osbourne, Brain Dead Collective and more. Rebecca Strickson, Artist. Working mostly in illustration, she combines an intricate hand-rendered aesthetic with an equally detailed choice of subject. Rebecca also works for the commercial arm of Ridley Scott's Film Company. Sabrina Mahfouz, Award-winning young British Egyptian poet, playwright, author and screenwriter. Plays include: Chef, With a Little Bit of Luck, Clean, Battleface and the love i feel is red; the poetry collection How You Might Know Me; the literary anthology The Things I Would Tell You: British Muslim Women Write. Rosie Hilal, RADA trained actor who works in TV, film, radio and theatre. She appeared in BBC’s ‘London Road’, at National Theatre in ‘The Hard Problem’, ‘Measure for Measure’ at The Globe and many times at the RSC. Phoebe Boswell, British Kenyan artist and film maker who combines traditional draftswomanship and digital technology to create drawings, animations and installations. She was nominated for Best International Short at Sundance 2017, she has been listed as an emerging UK filmmaker of note in Film London's Selected7, nominated by this year's Jarman Prize shortlist, and was shortlisted for - and awarded the Special Prize by - the Future Generation Art Prize 2017, through which she is exhibiting her interactive installation Mutumia at the 57th Venice Biennale.
