Feminism in India and Internet Democracy Project are pleased to invite you to a session on #onlineabuse at Digital Citizen Summit organised by Digital Empowerment Foundation.
Women’s expression, whether opinions or artwork or photographs, are constantly being curtailed on the internet. Be it due to online harassment or the censorship of female nudity in photographs and artwork by social media platforms, women are constantly made to feel unwelcome on digital spaces. This roundtable will discuss the various ways technology and society can make women’s participation in public spaces more egalitarian and safe.
Feminism in India will present its research report and campaign #DigitalHifazat. Based on our research report, we ran a campaign against online abuse and harassment that women face especially on social media websites. This campaign involved crowdsourcing articles from our followers about their experiences of online abuse, legal analysis of cybercrime prevention laws in India, and steps towards making the internet safe, secure and accessible for all. FII also holds workshops on online abuse and basic digital security tips.
Internet Democracy Project will present ‘Don’t Let It Stand', a yet-to-be-released web resource, which identifies and develops strategies that women use to deal with online abuse - aside from the legal options, which often receive the most attention. This builds on Internet Democracy Project’s work on the topic since 2012. The Internet Democracy Project's approach to dealing with the problem seeks to move away from asking for more legal interventions, which are ill-suited to address most of the kinds of text-based abuse. From this presentation, we hope to open the discussion to identify opportunities and gaps in the existing support systems.
