We Are Here: British BME Women is the first exhibition to take place in the newly launched art gallery, Alev Lenz Studio, located on Kingsland Road in Shoreditch. The artists and exhibition aim to provide an open platform for discussion around what it means to be British, led by BME (Black Minority Ethnic) women. The increase in anti-immigration rhetoric seen since the referendum to leave the EU last June makes this exhibition particularly poignant.
The group exhibition will display artworks by fourteen BME female artists, showcasing their responses and interpretations of what it means to be a BME woman living in Britain today. These two identities, British and BME, are often seen as mutually exclusive, and this exhibition aims to provide a platform for BME artists exploring their dual British identity. The show has been organised by a mix of twenty-something year old, London-based, BME female creatives.
