Fundraiser For Choice - an evening of live performance

At Feminist Library, London, United Kingdom
On 29th April 2017 7:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Description

Fundraiser For Choice - all funds raised will go towards Abortion Support Network. Join us for a theatrical extravaganza; an evening of new European writing, drinks, nibbles and stories about making that very personal choice.
Abortion Support Network is a charity providing practical information, funding and accommodation to women in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland forced to travel for safe, legal abortion.

1. I don’t have to pay anything to have the inside of my uterus cleansed with a hand vacuum. Suddenly I feel very privileged.

2. Then I realised that it is a crime and I started panicking. I was nervous, frightened, scared that I wouldn’t find anyone to do this for me, and that I won’t get enough money. I hated my body for doing whatever it pleased without my permission. I felt humiliated and nauseous. I got scared that someone may report me. And I remembered all of those stories about women regretting their decision and wishing to undo it. My friend’s aunt saved me by saying it was all nonsense, and that I would simply feel relieved.

3. Some may say: she could have just used contraception. That, unfortunately, costs money. Not everyone can afford it. I recently met a woman who said to me: Why would you decide to have three children in such poverty? And I said to her: I don’t remember having any choice.

When abortion is mainly spoken of by politicians, religious leaders and activists, it is easy to dismiss the women’s experience behind the placards and speeches. Heart breaking, dramatic, nonsensical, hilarious and touching as they may be, let’s hear them.

Suggested donation: £10. Free booking recommended.

This event is brought to you by FARSA & Dziewuchy Dziewuchom London
