Alborada presents the Alibi Film Sessions

On 13th April 2017 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Description

Alborada presents an evening of short films, talks and music on diverse themes relating to Latin America. Music chosen by Alborada soundsystem will be on rotation between and after films.

The bar will be serving drinks throughout and after the Alborada event there will be a DJ night in the same venue.

Admission is FREE all night.

Here is the programme for the evening, with four sessions focused on individual countries:

Session one: Mexico (6pm - 6.30pm)

With Trump's rise to power, thousands of Haitians seeking entry to the US are now left stranded at the northern Mexico border. But Black migration is not new to Mexico, as people from the African Diaspora have lived here for centuries. In this short documentary, we meet Haitians stuck at the border as well as Africans in Mexico City to explore Black migration and identity in Mexico.

Session two: El Salvador (6.30pm - 7.15pm)

Thirty years after El Salvador's devastating civil war, the filmmakers visit the country to document the construction of a new museum of memory and human rights. They reunite with communities they first encountered in the 1980s to discuss social and political conditions in the post-conflict scenario. The film will be introduced by director Richard Duffy with a Q&A afterwards.

Session three: Brazil (7.15 - 7.45pm)

Two exceptional documentaries charting Brazil's contemporary music scene, featuring some of the country's most dynamic musicians.

Session four: Colombia (7.50 - 8.30pm)

Fictional film that simulates being a documentary about filmmakers who exploit poverty for their own mercantile purposes. In coining the term 'misery-porn', this is a classic work of Latin American dissident cinema.

Musica (8.30 - 10pm)
A playlist by the Alborada Soundsystem selectors

(from 10pm DJs from another night take over - free all night until 2am)
