Women's March Nijmegen

Op zaterdag 11 maart demonstreren we in Nijmegen vóór diversiteit en gelijke rechten voor iedereen, en tégen elke vorm van discriminatie*. We maken een vuist tegen haat en uitsluiting, en strijden onder andere voor een inclusief Nederland, nu we aan de vooravond staan van de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen op 15 maart.

We doen dit in het kader van de internationale Women’s Marches, die bij de inauguratie van de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump over de hele wereld werden gehouden. Op 11 maart vindt er opnieuw wereldwijd protest plaats. Ook in Nederland worden meerdere marches gehouden die dag.

De ‘march’ in Nijmegen wordt geen daadwerkelijke march zijn: we demonstreren op Plein ’44 en blijven daar ook, van 12.00 uur tot 13.30 uur.

Het is onze insteek om zo inclusief mogelijk te zijn, en iedereen de ruimte en vrijheid te geven om op hun eigen manier te demonstreren (mits geweldloos en binnen de kaders van de wet). Als organisatie zullen we dan ook geen pussy hats breien, protestborden maken voor deelnemers, of een bepaald symbool centraal stellen. We moedigen iedereen vooral aan om zelf met borden, leuzen, en symbolen te komen!

De organisatie wil benadrukken dat het definieren van een vrouw op basis van haar geslacht of reproductieve organen niet past binnen de inclusieve gedachte van de march, en schadelijk is voor vrouwen die buiten deze definitie van vrouwelijkheid passen (hetzelfde geldt ook voor andere genders).

Verschillende organisaties hebben al toegezegd aanwezig te zijn op 11 maart. Vertegenwoordigers van Amnesty Nijmegen, Dito, COC Nijmegen, en de Transgendergroep Nijmegen zullen hun stem laten horen.

*Hieronder verstaan we seksisme, racisme, islamofobie, antisemitisme, transfobie, homofobie, en elke andere discriminatie op grond van gender, seksualiteit, ras, en religie. En natuurlijk tellen ook de rechten van mensen met een handicap: we zorgen dan ook dat de demonstratie voor mensen in een rolstoel of scootmobiel toegankelijk is.

On Saturday 11 March we will stand together against hate and every form of discrimination*, and fight for diversity and equal rights for all. This fight is global as well as national: with the Dutch parliamentary elections coming up on 15 March, we want to make our voices heard in favor of an inclusive Dutch society.

The protest in Nijmegen is being held as part of the international Women’s Marches, a movement that swept the globe at the inauguration of the 45th American President, Donald Trump. On 11 March, again, there will be protests across the world, including in different cities in the Netherlands.

The ‘march’ in Nijmegen won’t be an actual march: we will stay in one place, Plein ’44, from 12 to 1.30pm.

It is our aim to be as inclusive as possible, and we want to make sure that everyone has the freedom to express themselves any way they like (of course, within the confines of the law). As the organizing volunteers, we won’t knit pussy hats, craft protest signs for participants, or promote a specific sign or symbol. Of course, we encourage everyone to come up with their own signs, songs, and symbols!

The organization would like to emphasize that defining a woman based on her genitals and reproductive organs does not match the inclusive idea of the march, as such a narrow notion of womanhood excludes many women.

Several organizations have confirmed they will join the protest in Nijmegen: Amnesty Nijmegen, Dito, COC Nijmegen, and the Transgender group Nijmegen will be present and will make their voices heard.
