The intersection of witches and feminism go long back. The witch has long been a symbol of fear and the witch-hunts resulted in mass persecution and torture of women in Europe during centuries. These women would be healers and midwives with alternative medical knowledge about sexual reproduction who challenged traditional knowledge. The witch embodies a powerful woman, free from male ownership, who has both reflected and challenged patriarchal narratives historically. Today, witch craft offers an alternative to religion, anti-feminist and corrupt medical practices, to capitalist society and as a tool for inner empowerment and strength.
Our special Friday night program dedicated to the Witch includes an interactive ritual and performance and a screening of Anna Biller’s magnificent The Love Witch.

We are the witches you learned to feared. We are the goddesses men once revered. We are the exiled. We are the burned. We hold the secret to all that you yearn.
We have wandered among feral felines, daydream believers, truthseekers, freedom fighters, and riot grrls. We live among wolves and sleep under the glow of the moon. We write fortunes and tell stories to strangers. We have mapped our way to nowhere and imagined the end of days. We are karmic soldiers inciting an insurrection of subjugated knowledge. Our tribe of lost souls will free the witch that lives within you.

Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder. With a visual style that pays tribute to Technicolor thrillers of the ‘60s, THE LOVE WITCH explores female fantasy and the repercussions of pathological narcissism.
