International Women's Day: Strike, March, and Panel

At Minnesota Power Plaza, Duluth (MN), United States
On 8th March 2017 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Description

March 8th is International Women's Day. To recognize this important date and the role of women as workers, the Feminist Justice League will be hosting a symbolic 78 minute strike, followed by a march and discussion.

The purpose of this event is to draw attention to this issue of wage parity, while standing in solidarity with women all over the world who will be going on strike on March 8th. This event is in support of the nation wide "Day without a Woman" which has been called by Women's March.

The focus of the 78 minute strike will be wage parity. This will begin at 5pm at the MN Power Plaza. It will last for 78 minutes as that is the wage gap between men and women. At various intervals during the event, we will ring a bell to highlight the wage gap of minority women. For instance, at 54 minutes a bell will be rung for Hispanic women who make 54 cents to the dollar compared to men. African American women make 64 cents to the dollar.

After 78 minutes, we will march to the Building for Women for a discussion about women as workers. Issues such as unpaid work, parental leave, sex work, the wage gap, sexual harassment, and other feminist labor issues will be discussed by panelists and participants.

This event is hosted by the Feminist Justice League and supported by the Feminist Action Collective, Northland Grandmothers for Peace, Twin Ports Anonymous, and Lake Superior Socialist Action.
