Striking Back at Sexism: An International Woman's Day Panel

At 3166 Mount Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010-2747, United States
On 8th March 2017 7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Description

Take part in an international day of action March 8 at “Striking Back at Sexism: An International Women's Day Panel Discussion.”

The day memorializes a spontaneous strike of 20,000 women garment workers--the great majority of whom were immigrants-- in New York in 1909. In 1917, International Women’s Day inspired a spontaneous strike of women factory workers in Petrograd. Their courage was contagious , and on the fifth day of strikes, Czar Nicholas II abdicated the throne.

Women today have broader, but equally weighty, fights to win and rights to protect. This year, the International Socialists Organization, in solidarity with organizers across the nation, plan to focus on women left out by the “glass-ceiling” neoliberal feminists. Speakers represent:

The Native rights movement
The teachers' labor movement
The Syrian Solidarity Collective
The Socialist Alternative
The International Socialist Organization.

You can read about the goals of the strike at www.womenstrikeus.org. Islamophobia, immigration, American Indian environmental justice, sexuality and gender, and racial injustice are women’s issues, too. We look forward to hearing from you, the audience, about women’s issues that you believe are worthy of immediate mass action!

Location: La Casa Community Center, 3166 Mount Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010--Columbia Heights is the nearest metro
