In the aftermath of Trump’s election, identity policies have also become a topic of discussion in Germany. The initial hypothesis: “Trump won over white workers who felt they had been left behind because Hillary Clinton all too often campaigned on behalf of marginalized groups such as blacks, women, or LGBT communities”.

The culprit according to German feature pages: feminism. The tenor: nobody who incessantly cries wolf (sexism) can be believed any more when a real fire breaks out (Trump). In short: feminism has lost its potency; it is now all about nuances, so the theory goes. Yet, whilst in Germany the focus is still on using a distorted image of feminism, women’s rights in the USA are succeeding in building ties and mobilizing masses of people.

In Germany, the feminist struggles revolving around fundamental issues are being ignored – not least of all in 2016: the year began with acts of sexualized violence being committed in Cologne on New Year’s Eve. Feminists called for such violence to be made a topic without exception (Ausnahmslos). “No Means No” was finally entrenched in the German Criminal Code. Yet this success, which had been demanded by feminist activists for decades, was packaged with a tightening of the asylum law.

In the run-up to International Women’s Day 2017, on 8 March, the Gunda Werner Institute’s StreitWert team categorically states: the key feminist issue is still violence. What is being maligned as “nuances” can also be described as a necessary complexity: taking sexism and sexualized violence seriously without exception means also discussing this issue in connection with racism. “Rape culture” is not an import product. It runs through every layer of society.

In light of this, Debatable (StreitWert) asks: How does rape culture work? How can legislation change culture?
What debate should ideally follow on from the reforms of Section 177 of the German Criminal Code?
How can and must we (continue to) combat sexualized violence?
Do we not need even more emancipative identity policy rather than less? “Women's rights are human rights!” This long-standing proclamation has never been more topical.
How can and must feminism mobilize against Trumpism and the right-wing AfD party, also in Germany?
