Let's Change The Record

At University of Westminster - Harrow Campus, London, United Kingdom
From 21st May 2016 11 a.m. to 22nd May 2016 9 p.m.

Description

The University of Westminster’s MA Music Business Management is proud to announce the first of a series of events that seeks to instigate change in the dynamics of gender inequality in the music business, starting with the underrepresentation of women in music production and music technology.

There has been a great deal of press coverage in this area over the last 12 months coming from female artists as well as women working in all areas of the music industry. As BBC Radio One’s DJ Annie Mac’s broadcast (March 2016) on the subject of women in the music industry points out, women make up less than 15% of writers registered at PRS and less than 15% of performers booked to play UK festivals are women.

The University of Westminster has been at the forefront of Popular Music education for the last 20 years in Europe and it is incumbent upon us in the educational field to take real grassroots action to change the record for women in the significant field of music production, that contributes so much to not only the UK economy but also to our identity and experience in the world. With the global success of UK music we want to ensure that women have the knowledge and confidence to continue making their voices heard.

On the weekend of May 21/22nd we will be hosting a women-only studio lock in where we will be getting to grips with audio technology and making some noise!

We hope Let’s Change the Record will be an inclusive and collaborative umbrella under which women from all over the world can meet to further their knowledge and gain confidence and experience in all areas of music production and music business.

Entry is free by application, however there are limited places due to studio space. Apply by sending us an email telling us a little about yourself and any experience you may have. Contact Sally Gross by email: grosss@westminster.ac.uk
