Seit seiner Jugend kämpft Henri Tiphagne für ein gerechteres Indien. Heute gehört er mit seiner Organisation „People’s Watch“ zu den bekanntesten Menschenrechtsverteidigern des Landes. Die deutsche Sektion von Amnesty International verleiht ihm am 25. April 2016 ihren 8. Menschenrechtspreis.

Am 29. April lädt Amnesty International alle, die mehr über die Arbeit von Henri Tiphagne sowie die Lage für zivilgesellschaftliches Engagement in Indien erfahren wollen, zum Gespräch mit Henri Tiphagne ein.

Henri Tiphagne begann in den 1980er Jahren, als Menschenrechtsanwalt Aktivist_innen zu verteidigen, die vom Staat verfolgt wurden. 1995 gründete er die Organisation „People’s Watch“, um Menschenrechtsverletzungen im südindischen Bundesstaat Tamil Nadu zu dokumentieren. Seither hat sich die Arbeit der Organisation stetig ausgeweitet.

Als Demokratie bekennt sich Indien offiziell zu den Rechten auf Meinungs- und Versammlungsfreiheit. Doch in der Realität behindert die indische Regierung zivilgesellschaftliches Engagement: Genau wie unzählige andere NGOs in Indien leidet „People’s Watch“ unter staatlichen Repressionen. Die Regierung hat bereits tausenden NGOs die Lizenz entzogen und macht es vielen weiteren unmöglich, Gelder aus dem Ausland zu erhalten.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Englisch statt, auf Wunsch mit kurzen Zusammenfassungen und Übersetzungen ins Deutsche. Die Veranstaltungsräume sind barrierefrei zugänglich.

Beginning in his youth Henri Tiphagne has been fighting for a just society in India. Today he and his organisation People's Watch belong the most well-known human rights defenders in the country. Amnesty International Germany will award its 8th Human Rights Award to Henri Tiphagne on April 25th. Amnesty invites all interested in Henri Tiphagne's activism and the current state of India's civil society to take part in an evening of discussions with Henri Tiphagne on April 29th.

In the 1980s Henri Tiphagne then a human rights lawyer started to defend activists which were persecuted by the state. In 1995 he founded People's Watch to investigate and document human rights violations in the south-Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Since then People's Watch has continuously expaned its operations.

As a democracy India is officially heralding the freedoms of expression and assembly. Although in reality the Indian government is impeding civil society initiatives: Along with a many other NGOs in India People's Watch has faced oppression by the state. Thousands of organisation have seen their license retracted and legislation has made it incredibly hard to get funding from foreign donors or partner organisations.

The event will be held in English with short summaries and translations into German if needed. The venue is barrier-free.
