B for Boy is a contemporary drama set in Nigeria about one woman's desperate need for a male child. It explores the discrimination of women in the name of culture and religion.
“There are two main themes I explore in the film. One is an uneasy sense of traditional and modern culture coexisting in Nigeria, and the second is injustice against women, perpetuated and sustained by other women. The victims become the victimisers, so to speak. I think it derives from anger on the part of women who put up with this inequality – who are you to balk at tradition?”
B for Boy is Chika Anadu's first feature film. Before going into film, Anadu studies law and she has a Master's degree in Africa: Human and sustainable development. B for Boy has been shown at a number of prestigious film festivals and has won several prices.
Anadu takes inspiration from filmmakers such as Susanne Bier, Steve McQueen and Paul Thomas Anderson.
