Abel Barrera ist Leiter des Menschenrechtszentrums Tlachinollan in Tlapa, Bundesstaat Guerrero, Mexiko. Das Zentrum setzt sich insbesondere für indigene Gemeinden ein, die vielfachen Bedrohungen ausgesetzt sind, von staatlicher Seite als auch durch organisierte Kriminalität.

Im Jahr 2011 erhielt Abel Barrera für seine Arbeit den 6. Menschenrechtspreis von Amnesty International Deutschland. Das Gespräch bietet die Gelegenheit, Einblicke in die Herausforderungen der Menschenrechtsarbeit in der Region und in die neuen Entwicklungen in Mexiko zu gewinnen
