Mit seinem Vater setzt er auf das kleine und unberechenbare Pferd Jappeloup, das ihn nach einigen Anfangsschwierigkeiten bei nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerben von Sieg zu Sieg trägt, bei den Olympischen Spielen in Los Angeles aber aus dem Sattel wirft. Erst1988 erfüllt sich in Seoul Durands großer Traum. Die beiden gewinnen die Goldmedaille.
