Im Zweiten Weltkrieg gelingt dem 9-jährigen Srulik die Flucht aus dem Warschauer Ghetto. Im Wald versucht er zu überleben, doch als die winterliche Kälte zu extrem wird, findet er Unterschlupf bei einer Bäuerin. Bei ihr lernt der jüdische Junge sich als katholischer Waisenjunge Jurek mit "Gelobt sei Jesus Christus" auf den Lippen durchzuschlagen. Seine Odyssee wird ihn durch ganz Polen führen, und er trifft nicht nur hilfsbereite Menschen.
