Joan Eardley’s biographer, Christopher Andreae, talks about Joan Eardley (1921-63) – one of the most influential Scottish painters of her generation whose paintings and drawings reflect urban and rural Scotland in an expressive visual language unlike any other artist’s.

Being a serious artist was a “tough” business, especially for a painter determined to make her work – for example her sea paintings – a head-on confrontation between experience and its expression in paint. Showing a remarkable balance between characteristics which historically have been regarded as either typically male or female, Eardley’s work can at once be tough and objectively honest, yet tender and maternal – as seen in her drawings and paintings of Glasgow children.

Joan is featured on our Women of the Merchant City Heritage walk. This is a rare opportunity to learn more about this Glasgow Woman artist through the eyes of her biographer.
