Ourselves + others: african feminist re-CREATIONS at SOAS

En Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, Londres, Reino Unido
Desde el 25 Noviembre 2017 13:00 al 26 Noviembre 2017 03:00

Descripción

Does the Africa you know - the clothes, food, ideas, music, and culture - not match the continent you see represented in academia, the media, and elsewhere? Do you look around your university or workplace and wonder where you’re represented? Do you know the danger of a single story?

A new contemporary African arts festival is here to change the narrative. Step inside

ourselves + others: african feminist re-CREATIONS at SOAS
Presented by the Centre for African Studies and Ifeanyi Awachie, Founder of AFRICA SALON

Inspired by Nigerian scholar Obioma Nnaemeka’s theory of nego-feminism - a strand of African feminism - ourselves + others will offer a unique mix of intellectual spaces, performances, and community. You’ll experience cutting-edge visual art, philosophize on black feminisms and literature, meet London’s black creative platforms, dance to live music, alkayida at our afterparty, and so much more.

Peep the lineup:

saturday november 25

- regarding ourselves. A visual conversation between high-profile artists whose work touches upon notions of subjecthood, negotiation, and the body. Artists Juliana Kasumu and Rehema Chachage will be present for intimate conversations about their work. Featuring Juliana Kasumu, Rehema Chachage, Lebohang Kganye, Angèle Etoundi Essamba, Siwa Mgoboza, Sethembile Msezane, Fatoumata Diabaté, Nancy Mteki, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Joana Choumali, Mary Sibandé, and Angélica Dass. Curated by Raquel Villar-Pérez

- creative market. Members of a new creative class, young African and Caribbean creatives from SOAS and beyond are obeying their artistic urges and crafting innovative forums in media, literature, entrepreneurship, and more. Both a fair and exhibition, Creative Market will present conceptual installations by London’s black and African digital platforms. Experience the brands you follow on social media IRL, chat about making space for black and African culture, and find inspiration for your own creative route. Featuring Roundtable, Clapback Zine, Out the Box, and Books and Rhymes

- salon. Afternoon tea and practical exploration of black and African feminisms fueled by Awino Okech, SOAS Centre for Gender Studies, and Minna Salami, Founder, MsAfropolitan. Moderated by Siima Itabaaza

- workshop. Hosted by African literature aficionados Afrikult., this interactive session will present new theory on the work of London poet Momtaza Mehri

- concert. The esteemed Brunei Lecture Theatre will transform into concert hall, serving up performances plus Q&A sessions with the artists. Featuring sound artist XANA and R&B artist Shaé

- afterparty. Embracing the nego-feminist practice of acting for “ourselves and others,” the festival will partner with Afrobeats Party (King Cross) to provide a space for embodied participation in contemporary African and diasporic music
