Die Serie 'Forty Three' der Fotografin Alice Connew entstand 2013, im schlimmsten Berliner Winter seit 43 Jahren. Gerade in Berlin angekommen suchte die neu-seeländische Künstlerin Ablenkung von der Trostlosigkeit des Berliner Winters. Dafür nutzte sie eine armlose Kinder-Kleiderpuppe aus dem Müll, die ihr als Synonym für die eigene iso-lierte Situation in einer fremden Stadt diente. Sie schafft es in ihren Bildern, diese thematische Verbindung nicht plakativ wirken zu lassen, sondern ihre unbehagliche und verlorene Stimmung greifbar werden zu lassen. Bevor sie sich in Berlin niederließ, studierte sie an der Ilam School of Fine Arts im neuseeländischen Christchurch. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des Ver-lagskollektivs GLORIA-Books, das Kunst- und Fotobücher veröffentlicht. Hier ist auch Alice Connews erstes Fotobuch mit der Serie 'Forty Three' erschienen.

The series Forty Three was created by the photographer Alice Connew in 2013, during Berlin's worst winter in forty three years. Newly arrived in Berlin, the New Zealand artist was searching for a distraction from the bleakness of the Berlin winter. She used an armless child mannequin found in the rubbish as a synonym for her own isolation in a foreign city. Her pictures do not create this thematic connection boldly, but rather create a tangibly uncomfortable and lost atmosphere.

Before she settled in Berlin, Alice Connew studied at Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. She is the co-founder of GLORIA Books, a publisher of art and photography books, through which her first book, the series Forty Three, was published.

The entrance to EWA Frauenzentrum is generally reserved for women, but men are very welcome to attend the vernissage. Further viewings can be arranged by appointment. We ask for your understanding.
