Just 5% of music producers are women, even though many of the most bankable pop stars are female. Only six women have been nominated for the Grammy’s Producer of the Year, and no woman has ever won.
In Play Your Gender, Juno Award-winning recording artist and producer Kinnie Starr to music industry stars and veterans about the realities of being a woman in the recording studio and an industry dominated by “dudebros”. The film features interviews with musicians including Sara Quinn of Tegan & Sara, Melissa Auf der Maur of Smashing Pumpkins and Hole, Patty Schemel of Hole and Chantal Kreviazuk.
Drawing on their experiences of blinkered label executives and pop songwriters and overwhelmingly male environments in the studio, on the road and on stage, female artists speak to Starr of their fight to be taken seriously as creative forces in a world that sexualises and undervalues them. We hear of the dearth of female figures at all levels, from mastering engineers to producers, and of their battle with their own internalised misogyny. Frank and thought-provoking, Play Your Gender is an inspirational call for women to confront these issues and work to support each other.
Doc’n Roll Film Festival is supported by the BFI using funds from the National Lottery to grow audience appetite and enjoyment for a wide range of independent British and international films.
