Invisibility of Muslim Women: Race, Gender and Representation

South Asian Women's Creative Collective London lead a discussion responding to our popular exhibition Mahtab Hussain: You Get Me?. Hussain’s photographs exploring the critical question of identity among young working-class British Asian men.

We will focus on the issues of masculinity raised in Hussain’s portraits from a female perspective, opening a dialogue about the poignant (in)visibility of Muslim women, the perceived notions of their place in British society, and their faith.

The event will take place in the You Get Me? exhibition in our ground floor gallery, where the discussion will open with performance by poet Shareefa Energy.

Speakers include: Subi Shah, a broadcaster and journalist for BBC, The New Internationalist, The Voice and LBC radio. Bilkis Malek, Director of Transcultural Visions, and Shareefa Energy. Chaired by Sonia Mehta, founder of South Asian Women's Creative Collective London; previously she managed the education wing of the band Asian Dub Foundation.

Following the talk, there will a Q&A with the audience.
