In May's edition of The Uncomfortable Truth, Fouzia Siddique and Maria Q - two female muslim speakers - share their persectives on feminism and identity in a personal and interactive talk featuring their two life stories.
ABOUT FOUZIA SIDDIQUE
When Fouzia Siddique grew up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, her life was already planned out for her: she would finish her studies at university, get married at 18-21, have a couple of children at 25, and spend the rest of her life serving her family.
However, this imposed life itinerary didn't quite sit well with her. Taking charge of her own life, Fouzia ended up independently moving to India, finishing a Masters in Bengaluru, and getting her doctorate in London, where she now works as a Dr in Clinical Psychology. In her own words, she has never looked back.
ABOUT MARIA Q
When she was 6 years old, Maria and her family left their home in Pakistan to escape the impact of the country's terrifying, violent blasphemy law and seek better opportunities in the UK.
What Maria was not prepared for, however, was the struggle that would follow, learning to fit into a society so very different from her childhood's and juggling the demands and expectations of not one, but two very different cultures. In the midst of this, Maria was challenged to forge her own identity, staying true to both her Islamic beliefs and her feminist values.
