Beyond 377: What India needs to do for Queer and Trans Justice

En Habitat World, India Habitat Centre, Delhi, India
El 1 Mayo 2017 19:00 - 21:00

Descripción

Feminism in India and Gaylaxy Magazine are organising a panel discussion for IDAHOT (International Day Against Homophobia, BiPhobia and Transphobia) on May 1st at India Habitat Centre from 06:30 pm to 09:00 pm. The topic of the panel discussion is Beyond 377: What India needs to do for Queer and Trans Justice.

Brief note about the panel topic:

Section 377 remains like a sword hanging on the LGBT community and remains the source of many police harassment and blackmail, but is that the only violence faced by the queer community? Much of the fight for queer rights in India has centered around section 377, but is this law the only source of violence in their lives?

Queer people face violence not just in the hands of police, but much of it happens in family, friends, at workplace. From trying to "correct" the sexual or gender identity of their children through shock therapies etc, to the constant harassment at workplace or schools or colleges, homo/bi/trans phobia goes beyond just Section 377. Removal of 377 can be the first step, but not the only step at preventing this violence. On the occasion of IDAHOBiT, we discuss the kinds of violence faced by queer people, and what steps can we take to prevent it.

Panellists:

1. Dhrubo Jyoti, Journalist and Queer Activist
2. Anand Grover, Senior Advocate, Lawyers Collective
3. Simran Sheikh, transgender activist and senior programme officer in Sexuality Gender and Rights with Alliance India
4. Rituparna Borah, Queer feminist and co-founder of Nazariya
