Her instrument is the Mbira Dzavadzimu, which translates
as “voice of the ancestors“. This thumb piano with 22-28
metal keys fixed on a piece of wood of a healing tree is
played by the Shona people of Zimbabwe since thousands
of years. To the Shona people the Mbira is more than just
an instrument. It is actually the tool through which
communication with the spirit of the world and the
anscestors is made possible.
In traditional Shona culture, people remain a part of the
community even after their death. At special all-night
ceremonies, called Bira, they are called back by the sounds
of the Mbira, and possess a person through whom they
communicate with the living. Due to the so-called queen of
Mbira Stella Chiweshe, the Mbira timbre is "closely related
to the sound of water“, and aids the spirits in taking over
the participant's body.
Invited by Seltene Erden, Stella Chiweshe will perform two
sets of Mbira playing and singing on september 18th at
Klunkerkranich.
