On October 22nd, hundreds of Hardy Girls' supporters will don their sneakers (and witches’ hats and eye patches and wigs!) and hit the course for a great cause.
Halloween today probably isn’t what you remember it as a kid. Take a walk down any store’s costume aisles now and prepare to be horrified — but not in the way that you’d expect. Where once hung zombie masks, face paint, and clown wigs, you’ll see corsets, sparkly wings, and fishnets — intended, frighteningly, for little girls.
As far as Halloween health concerns go, we’re far more worried about costumes than we are candy. Besides the plethora of negative effects that early sexualization of girls causes throughout their lives, peddling limited options for consumer gain is an appalling affront on girls’ creativity and imaginations. 2011 marks the third year now we’ve decided that we’re not going to take it anymore, so once again we’re taking it to the streets to run, walk, and protest the sexualization of Halloween costumes for girls. And we plan to do it in costume.
Needless to say, we miss the creative, scary, ingenious costumes that don’t come in plastic bags — so we’re doing our part to bring some scary back. We hope that you’ll join us in helping make sure it’s back to stay.
Here’s the plan:
• On October 22nd, 250 runners & walkers of all ages will gather in Waterville to participate in the 3rd Annual Freaky 5K Fun Run & Walk.
• Runners & Walkers are encouraged to suit up in costume for the big event! T-shirts will be given to the first 100 people that register, and refreshments will be provided.
• Prizes will be awarded in categories such as Scariest Costume and Most Funds Raised.
The proceeds from the Freaky 5K directly benefit Hardy Girls Healthy Women’s programming.
