No Filter: Healing through Photography, Writing, Community

Am 5. November 2017 12:00 - 17:00

Beschreibung

Join us for a day of shedding stories that no longer serve us and capturing our true image. A collective image that honors all of the complexities, power, and wisdom we have as queer, trans, femme, people of color. Through a guided writing practice, an unapologetic photoshoot, and herbal medicine, we’ll be able to filter out harmful things from our minds, bodies, and spirits.

12-12:30pm - Opening + Introductions

12:30-2:00pm - Writing Workshop

2:00-4:00pm Photography Sessions

4:00-5:00pm - Discussion + Closing

Tickets will gain you entry to the event, as well as offer you supplies for the workshops + a file to one final #nofilter photo taken by Maria Ribeiro. This event is $11-$33 sliding scale. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

About the hosts:

Veronica Agard is an alchemist, educator and connector at the intersections of Black identity, wellness, representation, and culture. Of Afro-West Indian, African-American and Indigenous descent, she continues to experiment with healing modalities such movement, singing, herbalism, divination, capoeira, and yoga. Her primary channel is writing, and holds healing space for community through writing cyphers. She is a proud 2014 graduate of The City College of New York with a BA international studies and history and is a co-founder of the Sister Circle Collective. No matter the role, she offers her expressions as a means to amplify the voices of those that walk with her. www.veronicaagard.com

Maria Ribeiro is a photographer, graduated in Audiovisual and specialized in photography direction by the International Academy of Cinema, SP. After working in the advertising market and understanding how the image of women is presented in the media, she dedicated herself to photography as an instrument of female empowerment through natural, artistic and image manipulation-free pictures. She believes that feel represented is essential in building a healthy relationship between women and their bodies. Within this concept, she created the project " A word for feminism" in which she photographed a hundred women of different bodies, colors and contexts with the word that represents feminism for each one stamped on their bodies. The project has become a book that brings, in addition to the images, a testimony in the first person where each participant shares her own story. Through the impact of her work, she was invited to give workshops and lectures throughout Brazil (UFBA, Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte), UN Women, Youth Forum and B.U.F.U Project in New York. Maria Ribeiro also realizes documentary projects rescuing the history of sertanejas, quilombolas and indigenous women. In 2016 she received the Ivone Herberts Award in New York for the relevance of her work in the fight for women's rights.
