Early Stage Researchers Event: Where does a STEM degree go?

We will have talks by Prof. Bronwyn Harch of the Queensland University of Technology on navigating a zig-zagging career pathway in STEM and professionals from Accenture, MongoDB and UCD.

They will be talking about what to expect from a career in STEM mostly from a technical, engineering and biomedical perspective. This event is for students, graduates and anyone who wants to know where STEM careers can go!

The Title of Prof Harches Talk : Solving the Equation Through a Nonlinear Career Path.

Traditional career progression has often dictated a pathway of picking a profession and following a vertical line. In an age of constant new discovery, technology disruption, traditional job role changes and transforming expectations; not only has the peak changed, the pathway often becomes more of a nonlinear or zig-zagging journey.

Professor Bronwyn Harch knows firsthand this zig-zagging pathway can not only be difficult to navigate but can often be a daunting process. In this talk, Professor Harch will explore the alternate pathways for navigating your career, looking at the trials and triumphs that can happen along the way. Professor Harchwill focus on tips and tricks to navigating these zig-zagging pathways from the perspective of a statistical scientist – and not being afraid to take those leaps of faith to the side, in the opposite direction or taking a pause when needed along the way.

Professor Bronwyn Harch (FTSE, GAICD, AStat) is the Executive Director of the Institute for Future Environments (IFE) and Professor of Applied Statistical Science, at QUT, Brisbane, Australia.

Bronwyn is very passionate about delivering impact by generating knowledge, technology and practices that make our world more sustainable, secure and resilient. As Executive Director of IFE Professor Harch leads transdisciplinary research efforts – where industry, government and the community co-develop with QUT researchers initiatives that address global challenges that build a strong Australia with a competitive economy. Bronwyn sees the Institute as a catalyst for delivering innovation through transdisciplinary collaboration, nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit of QUT researchers and inspiring the next generation to recognise STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) as being at the heart of the nation’s competiveness. Prof Harch is an applied statistician with 21 years experience undertaking research focused on the statistical design of landscape-scale sampling protocols and monitoring programs, as well as the statistical modelling of complex systems. Her research has mainly been applied at the nexus of agricultural and environmental systems. Bronwyn’s unique ability to lead research in “informatics”, as well as its adoption into numerous sectors of the economy, was recognised by her peers with her being elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering (ATSE) in 2013.
