Let's Talk Intersectionality: Resistance in Comics

Am 7. September 2017 19:30 - 21:00

Beschreibung

We're back! We are excited to announce our next Let’s Talk Intersectionality: Resistance in Comics. It will be Thursday, September 7th from 7-9pm. Our guest is Sofia Niazi, co-founder of OOMK zine and DIY Cultures Fair.

These are turbulent times we are living in and resistance is far from futile. Comics and zines have long been mediums for political activism and social justice. September 7th is dedicated to talking about the role of comics in resisting all the patriarchal, racist, sexism, xenophobic, classist and ableist forces at work in the world!

Let’s Talk Intersectionality is a reading and discussion group that explores feminist texts and issues from an intersectional perspective. Gosh! hosts a regular edition of Let’s Talk Intersectionality every few months. This month, we'll have brief presentations on resistance in comics, and then we'll break up in small groups to chat about resistance in these turbulent times and create a few pages for an original zine. Co-hosted by Lauren Murphy, Lisa Woynarski and Nora Goldberg, with brilliant guests to give us some provocations and hear some of their insights on these topics.

Sofia Niazi is an artist and illustrator working and living in London. She completed an MA in illustration at Kingston University. She is co-founder of OOMK (One of My Kind), and DIY Cultures Fair. She currently helps runs a community risograph print studio in Newham, Rabbits Road Press, with Rose Nordin and Heiba Lamara. Sofia has produced work for Migration Museum, Museum of London, Barbican and The Guardian. Her work looks at the intersection of activism & art. The zine world has helped create an accessible space for often overlooked voices to contribute to the art world.

No prior knowledge of comics necessary. All welcome.

In advance of this event, we recommend reading any of the following books to kick off our discussion:

365 Days by Julie Doucet
Threads by Kate Evans
Toward a Hot Jew by Miriam Libicki
Drinking at the Movies by Julia Wertz
Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi
How to Understand Israel in 60 days or Less by Sarah Glidden
March by Nate Powell
