The Realities of Being a Black Female Creative | Cassie Kinoshi

In this March edition of The Uncomfortable Truth, Cassie Kinoshi shares her first-hand experiences of being a black, female creative in the world of classical music, jazz, and performance.

With this talk (and other initiatives), Cassie is helping to raise awareness of the sexism, racism and micro-aggressions that she - and many with her - have to deal with on a daily basis in the creative industry. Join our London Meetup to hear one individual's account of what it can be like to:

- Go through the white male-dominated classical music & visual arts education as a black, female person
- Navigate assumptions, micro-aggressions, stereotyping and othered-ness as a woman/minority creative
- Find and create ways to overcome these microaggressions and prejudices whilst accepting and improving yourself as an artist and a person

... and learn how to be a better ally!

ABOUT OUR MEETUPS

The Uncomfortable Truth is a not-for-profit project which aims to create diverse, inclusive communities by giving a voice to speakers who are "othered" in mainstream society, helping individuals and communities to better connect and understand each other. After a +/- 45-minute talk, attendants will be invited to join in the discussion, ask questions to the speaker and the room, and share their own experiences.

ABOUT THE VENUE

This Uncomfortable Truth talk will be held at St Luke's Community Centre, nearest stations Old Street and Barbican. The venue is spacious and easily (wheelchair) accessible throughout. All surfaces are level and there is a disabled toilet downstairs. There is a hearing loop available for those with hearing aids. If at any point during the talk you get overwhelmed and would like to take a break, you can do so in the Quiet Room with our designated Welfare Person.

Uncomfortable topics don't require physical discomfort, so settle down in one of the seats with a cup of tea and a nice bite to eat before the talk gets started at 8pm sharp.

ABOUT PRICING

When attending the Uncomfortable Truth, we encourage you to contribute £10 - £15 for each talk (if you can, no one turn away for lack of funds). The first £80 go to the Speaker, the next £290 towards the cost of the venue, and whatever is left towards the recording equipment, the food and the organisers.
