New Cross Learning invites you to celebrate International Women’s Day with a look at the life and work of Sylvia Pankhurst - with a talk, slide show, political discussion and food and drink provided.
In researching for a new book on Sylvia’s life and politics, Jill Mountford tells the story of an amazing woman who not only broke from the confines of Edwardian sensibilities on what women should be but broke with her more famous mother and sister to help build a different kind of women's movement and pursue the fight for votes for all women (and men); social justice; equality and anti-racism; and workers' liberation.
Sylvia was a socialist, a revolutionary, a supporter of the Russian revolution in 1917 and an organiser who helped working-class women and men wage radical and revolutionary struggles in her own country - as well as a prolific writer and artist. Always ahead of her time, Sylvia was a role model for women in 1917 and is a role model for any modern woman today. This is a great spirited and boisrerous adventure crossing political, geographical, race and class boundaries.
Including photos and images from Sylvia's life and examples of her art. Plenty of time for questions and debate, as well as more informal discussion.
